This plaque was received by Robby Hamrick, WA4RH - 2003 Hamfest Chairman from the Cleveland County Board of Commissioners.  The plaque reads:

Number 25-2003

Resolution
In Appreciation of the
Shelby Amateur Radio Club

    WHEREAS, In 1957, at the home of Malcolm Spangler, Athos Rostan, Floyd Willis, Marvin Dixon, Edwin Patterson, John Lutz, Howard Ervin, Arlin Wilson, Charlie Harry, Travis Wall, George Washburn, David Spangler, Nick Delatonas, and J.B Hamrick held an organizational meeting of the Shelby Radio Club.  From that beginning, the Shelby Amateur Radio Club membership has now grown to eighty-five members;

    WHEREAS, the club received its non-profit corporation designation from the State of North Carolina on December 29, 1966.  By-laws were adopted and the club became the Shelby Radio Club, Inc.  Included in the by-laws was the rule that members must be a licensed amateur radio operator to be eligible for membership, a rule still in force;

    WHEREAS, the first "Hamfest" was held in 1957 at Brackett Cedar Park, with approximately three hundred people in attendance.  As the Hamfest prospered, it became necessary to move the event to a larger facility, so in 1979 moved to the Cleveland County Fairgrounds;

    WHEREAS, over the years, the annual two-day Hamfest held each Labor Day weekend, has grown to an "unofficial" ten-day event, this year drawing approximately 12,000 participants!

    WHEREAS, filling motels and restaurants, the 2003 Hamfest brought an estimated $400,000 into Cleveland County, truly making this hamfest "The Grandaddy of Them All."

    WHEREAS, the annual Hamfest gives Cleveland County an economic boost by the revenue it brings into the County, the Shelby Amateur Radio Club is also active in civic endeavors.  As a long-time member, the late Everett R. Hames, stated, the club has always been aware of "what is going on around us and what we as a club can do to help our fellow man."

    NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Cleveland County Board of Commissioners, hereby express their sincere appreciation to the members of the Shelby Amateur Radio Club for sharing their expertise and vision, and for promoting Cleveland County.  Their achievements, contributions and dedication to our community deserve special recognition.

    ADOPTED THIS THE 7th DAY OF OCTOBER 2003.
